Spice8Rack came out of nowhere yesterday with a massive 4+ hour opus entitled Magic: The Gathering, Revolution, & Fascism. Of course I had to start listening right away, and so far (at 2 hours and 43 minutes in) it’s a true-to-form ramble through the meticulously researched mind of the internet’s foremost mixologist of Magic lore and left politics.
At the risk of this coming across as just another four-hour leftist video essay, what stands out here the most so far is the incredible thematic exploration of revolutions through history: what worked, what didn’t, and why. The occasional return to Magic as an anchor provides some levity and a tonal contrast that makes the runtime pass swiftly, while keeping me eager to arrive at the present time and the conclusion he’s setting up for throughout. I feel like I’ll have something new to work with at the end, and that’s exciting.
- Runtime: 4:13:03
- Why to listen: For an expansive survey of revolution throughout real world history, seen through the lens of revolution in the Magic: The Gathering story and other fiction.
