Prominently disco

They fixed up the corner store like it was a nightclub,
It’s prominently disco.
Everyone is dressed so oddly I can’t recognize them,
I can’t tell the staff from the customers.

They Might Be Giants, Man It’s So Loud in Here

In the most recent incarnation of HD I wrote a review of Disco Elysium, which I’ve reposted for posterity.

If you won’t take my advice and play it, the next best thing you can do is watch this documentary series being produced by /noclip, the second part of which came out yesterday:

The first part (playlist linked above) includes such quotes as:

  • “1998 was the greatest year in gaming history”
  • “You form a gang and commit art against society”
  • “You glue the soul onto the puppet of the character”
  • “It’s the least of the illegal things happening with that IP”
  • “And then, at that time I became super interested in this guy called Hegel”
  • “The Elysium project itself, if you want a one-line elevator pitch for it, then it’s basically Soviet Tolkien.”

The documentary series is beautifully produced, including interviews with nearly all of the major players involved with the game’s genesis and production, and with a pace that befits the scope of the project and really lets the people and places that brought Disco to life speak for themselves. I’m eagerly awaiting the remaining parts of the series — in a lot of ways it’s feeling like the sequel to the game that we’re at this point never going to get.

If you have played the game, and like me you’re still hoping against hope that one of the spiritual successors will pan out, the two follow-up documentaries (1, 2) from People Make Games are also incredibly worth a watch, and the Jamrock Hobo YouTube account is worth a follow.
