Heisei Democracy Mascot Character Unveiled

You're under election!
You’re Under Election!

The folks over at Clockwork Machina have been at it for awhile, and boy was it worth the wait. The diabolical trio of Will, Kohei and Junpei have outdone themselves here with their smashing rendition of Demo-tan, now gracing the header as if she was born to be there.
Who is Demo-tan, I hear you asking! And what does it mean to be under election? All will be revealed in time, never fear – needless to say she’s not the only one who will be competing for your affection as mascot, should plans for her webcomic gather steam. And gather steam they will. Clockwork Machina is in the midst of finishing off designs for the other major protagonists, and Ayaseine has tentatively agreed to work on the comic, so provided we can all get synchronized there’s a bright future ahead for our intrepid heroine.
In the meantime, I think I’ll continue the happy dance I’ve been doing ever since this image arrived in my email box… Thanks again to Clockwork Machina for the selfless and entirely non- compensatory hard work they’ve put into this. You guys ROCK.

    Sonuva… … … …
    That’s a nice one.
Looks too much like Cagali, though.

  2. Shingo September 27, 2006 at 6:33 pm #

Holy crap, you’re right. I totally didn’t notice that.
Well, the creative process that went into putting her together couldn’t possibly have resulted from looking at Cagalli, so I’m satisfied. It’s original enough.
…if I’d really wanted to rip off a SEED character, she would look like this, anyway. :3

Cute but I expected something with a red and white scheme haha.

Looking like Cagalli is not a bad thing at all. But nice job, guys. I was expecting Shingo to draw someone himself and show off some crappy drawing he did, like most mascots of anime-related websites run by westerners.
She’d have and a penis, though.

    Wow! That’s really cute. I approve ( >_

Loli Cagalli for president, haha. Kidding aside, Demo-tan looks really cute. A fine job by the artist(s).

    She’s cute… but she’s no Nard-tan! Where’s the moe factor! Lol.

  11. loplop September 28, 2006 at 6:44 am #

Demo-chan looks nice, However, I was expecting a large frontal presence . . . LOL

I must say that she is well illustrated(cute) and is appropriate, but I am not finding the moe element in it so strong. Thus, the question why is that the case? Well I think it is to do with the Japanese/”Western” tinge that slightly eliminates the otakuistic element of moe. Any way it is cool that HD has a mascot character. Viva! HD! go! go!

  13. Agent Wax September 28, 2006 at 9:50 am #

Hmm. Cute, and I’m sure they really worked hard on her, but she doesn’t really do anything for me…
    Sorry. (_ _)

  14. Sydney2K September 28, 2006 at 12:17 pm #

    Demo-chan needs a wooden hobby horse as a mascot/sidekick.

  15. Saviour September 28, 2006 at 1:39 pm #

    She looks high.

  16. kento September 28, 2006 at 11:34 pm #

a greek with japanese sandals, a most suitable mascot for HD. definately a win in character design.

  17. Insectice September 29, 2006 at 8:13 pm #

Is she from Roman occupied Greece?
Then she could be from the province of Moesia! harharhar
I like it. Can’t wait for the (web?)comic. But I’ll still come here for the blog info, first and foremost
    …as if anyone wasn’t :|

  18. Shichan September 30, 2006 at 2:48 am #

Her eyes make her a ultimate win.

  19. Richard "Pocky" Kim September 30, 2006 at 3:00 pm #

    Very cute mascot. ^_^
Is she going to be in your doujinshi, Shingo? @.@

  20. Garry September 30, 2006 at 4:43 pm #

The peanut gallery craves Fashi-tan and Comu-tan! FEDERALIST-TAN IS REQUESTED BUT NOT DEMANDED.
    That is all.

I finally realized what was bothering me about Demo-tan…unlike all the other females in the illustrations arond her, she has teeth.

    >>I must say that she is well illustrated(cute) and is appropriate, but I am not finding the moe element in it so strong. Thus, the question why is that the case? Well I think it is to do with the Japanese/”Western” tinge that slightly eliminates the otakuistic element of moe.
For a while now, I’ve been interested in that “tinge” you speak of, that can make western anime style art exude a “non-japanese-ness” at first glance. Although it is often elements in the drawing style, I have come to believe it has a lot to do with poses and facial expressions. Someone above mentioned the bared teeth. Also note the finger thrust upward and away from the body, the straight legs spread apart, the slightly closed eyes and larger proportion of white to iris in the eyes.
The image as a whole exudes a self-confidence that seems to say “look at me! ain’t I cool? i know i am”. Actually, it’s more as if when I see the image, I picure the artists sitting at his table drawing it, thinking to himself how cool it is. That feeling from the creator makes its way into the character. It makes a kind of self-consciousness or self-awareness in the character that pushes against the fourth wall.
Compare it to the thumbnails on the left side of the page, or images in the linked Megami 77 review. The general feeling I get from those is something like “hello. this is who i am”. Even when they’re looking directly at the camera, it’s more as if they’re looking at another character in their world than addressing the real person ogling them.

    Oh Port-tan -_-

  24. LC October 15, 2006 at 11:38 am #

That is one nice insight from “Anonymous”… ^_^ But going back to the basic, she really resembles Cagalli, that its the first thought that entered my mind when I saw her… ^_^;; Congrats on the new mascot! ^_^

[…] Oh, and in completely unrelated news, my motherboard friend itself last night… not sure how. I am never buying refurbed equipment again. Also, Shingo and his personal Democracy finally got their image girl. Demo-tan now graces the top banner, gloriously doing something… I dunno. The artwork was done for him by the talented people at Clockwork Machina. Check them out. That's a free plug, you guys. That's how I roll.   […]
